The Rieslinger Fellowship

The Rieslinger Fellowship is Scherwiller’s Wine Fellowship. It is in homage of Riesling, Scherwiller’s top wine variety, that it was created in 1978, spurred on by Mr Emile BARTHEL and Mr Xavier WEBER. The Fellowship’s charter of honour brings together and associates for life “men of taste and eminent spirit who within the fellowship strive for a profound pleasure to defend and promote quality wines”, and in particular wines from Scherwiller.

Chaired by grand-master Bernard MARTIN, the Fellowship promotes wines from Scherwiller at local, national, as well as international level during wine and gourmet food congregations. It also meets up at the time of various events: that of the vigne nouvelle (new vine, in March), that of the vigne féconde (fertile vine, in July) as well as during the grand chapitre (great chapter, in August). It is during these events that new members are canonised. At present, the Fellowship has:

30 Rieslinger

• more than 150 Rieslinger Friends

• and many “Riesling Ambassadors”

The Rieslinger

Who are they ?

They are professional wine growers, born and bred in the area. As privileged actors within the fellowship, they are the guarantors of the wine-related traditions.

Their dress code in details

As a symbol of their predecessors’ dress code, it comprises:

• a blue wine grower’s blouse adorned with the coat of arms of Scherwiller

• brown velvet trousers

• a black hat

Around their neck, the Rieslingers bear a billhook pinned to a three-colour ribbon (blue, white, red) and the essential Loyala in hand.
